What is Wood?
Wood is formed in the trunk, branches and roots of trees and shrubs when the walls of the Xylem cells, the trees vascular system, (See also Biology Module) lignify i.e. harden up. Lignin is a tough polymer that binds and supports the cellulose fibres. Ever since humans learned to use tools they have recognized the importance of wood as a structural material, a facility that has yielded benefits, to the present day.
As each years layer of growth is triggered by the growing cells (Phloem) and the tree increases in size new wood is added and with it the variety of uses to which it can be put from fire kindling to tool handles to structural supporting beams.
The versatility of wood continues go give rise to new products from traditional use as a fuel, implements and building material to paper, fibre board, laminated and composites with other materials as well as new renewable fuel products.
